They have just begun their personal fitness journey together where I am their coach, and he remarked about how much it meant to him that Lisa is putting this renewed energy into her physical appearance: &#8220;After 35 years, you&#8217;ve been through a lot together. I make it a point to compliment her every time she completes a workout. I know it&#8217;s hard to do, but I see a difference in all of her work and I am all for her!&#8221;</p>
<p>This conversation with Andre inspired me to get bold&#8230;bolder than usual. My blog is a special place where I am overjoyed to share things that I&#8217;m learning or teaching, and sometimes it&#8217;s useful for thoughtful reflection. Based on this foundation, I feel safe to  talk with you about something that may be as sensitive to you as it is to me: <strong>our bodies, how our men view them, and our responsibilities to honor our men with them.</strong></p>
<p>First, most of us know that men are visual by nature &#8211; and this is a gift, a blessing from God, not a curse! Men were created to view, be attracted to, and enjoy beauty. Women are a key part of that beauty. We are women. &#8216;Nuff said.</p>
<p>Second, this is wrong: <em><strong>It only matters what&#8217;s on the inside, my man loves me for me, so big or small, my size doesn&#8217;t matter.</strong></em></p>
<p>Yes, your man and my man love us no matter what, but our size and appearance DOES matter to them! I&#8217;ve heard many women say this, most of them Christian wives with every intention of serving their husbands.</p>
<p><strong>&#8220;But it (our appearance) does matter!&#8221;</strong> Shares Shaunti Feldhahn, author of <a title="Book Review: For Women Only by Shaunti Feldhahn" href="http://gilliscoaching.com/book-review-for-women-only-by-shaunti-feldhahn/" target="_blank">For Women Only</a>,<strong> &#8221;&#8230;and when we seem to be willfully ignoring the truth (that our appearance does matter), our men &#8211; even godly men who are devoted to us &#8211; end up feeling disregarded, disrespected, and hurt.&#8221;</strong></p>
<p>Wow!</p>
<p>Personally, I am deeply convicted to make sure I don&#8217;t take advantage of my husband&#8217;s love by believing that my body size and shape doesn&#8217;t matter&#8230;because now I see this as a total excuse for being lax and lazy.</p>
<p>One man shared with his wife: &#8220;When you take care of yourself, I feel like you care about me.&#8221;</p>
<p>You are probably just like me, sister, where one of our main goals as wife is to make sure our husband knows how deeply we care for him, and how much we want him to be happy with his decision to spend his life with us.</p>

<p>&#8220;Our men desperately want us to know but feel absolutely unable to tell us: the effort you put into your appearance is extremely high on his priority list.&#8221; Shaunti explains. In fact, 83% of men agree with her on that (per survey results listed above)! So lets just assume that your man is in that majority along with mine!</p>
<p>Andy, my husband of 7 years, has said numerous times: &#8220;I really like how hard you work to keep me physically attracted to you.&#8221;</p>
<p>And I certainly hope he is! I want my husband to look at me all the days of his life and smile. I vow to be constantly moving towards becoming a better woman spiritually, mentally, and physically. As Shaunti said, &#8220;It is important!&#8221;</p>
<p>Friends, I am completely convinced that, in order to please our men, we have to get in and keep our physical shape at a high level. This does not mean to make exercise an idol, or to go in crash diets or become unhealthily thin. It is about honoring your man and &#8220;dealing with weight, fitness, and appearance issues that we can healthfully do something about.&#8221; As Shaunti directs in her book.</p>
<p>A woman who started her weight loss journey just this morning, put it this way: <strong>&#8220;Katy, let me give it to you straight: I want to make the most of all that my body is capable of &#8211; God gave it to me, and I know there is a higher calling within my reach and I&#8217;m going to get there!&#8221;</strong></p>
<p>Would you agree with her? Floored, I certainly did!</p>
<p><strong>Here&#8217;s my challenge to you: if after reading this post, you feel the urging in your spirit to step to a higher place with your physical fitness, please take action and do something about it!</strong></p>

It just took me putting all my challenges aside, putting my husband&#8217;s needs above my lazy tenancies, and just going for it!</p>

<p>Summer 2009. I saw a very fit couple on the beach and slugged my husband &#8220;I bet you they do P90X!&#8221; since we&#8217;d seen and been mesmerized by the infomercials!</p>
<p>Both of us were a bit lazy and did not work out. I was 40 pounds overweight (and come from a family history of morbid obesity), Andy was one of those skinny-fat guys who had always been lean but out of shape.</p>
<p>We researched P90X when we got home that afternoon and saw that we could get a discount if we became Beachbody Coaches. Sweet! Reading a little further, we saw that Beachbody would actually SEND us customers if we did a good job with the business part of things. My banker brain kicked in: a business where I would not have to work hard to get clients? Yes please! Sounded too good to be true. But I figured we&#8217;d just jump out on this limb and worse case, we&#8217;d flop on the business side of it yet still get physically fit together!</p>
<p>So we signed up as coaches and started P90X.</p>
<p>After two full rounds, we were officially ripped. Friends and co-workers started asking us what we did, we told them and some of them bought theirs from our website. We made money.</p>
<p>In fact, we paid off all of our debt. I quit my job 8 months in and am a full time mommy to two pre-schoolers. My husband was able to take a year and a half (a YEAR and a HALF!) off of work so we could travel while our kids were still young. Yep, it&#8217;s that kind of lifestyle since your business goes where your laptop goes!</p>
<p>It seems like, over the past 4 years being a Beachbody Coach, that it&#8217;s been simple and easy this entire time. The hardest work I&#8217;ve ever done is in sitting down to read through a training manual or a personal development book!</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve found that, if we keep it simple, the business works. I just keep sharing my fitness journey with others publicly, and asking about their lives. If they are looking for a fitness solution, I direct them to my Beachbody website where they can get the best tools out there. I check in on them. Repeat.</p>
<p>Plus, Beachbody has given me over 800 customers since I became a Coach, and it sure is nice to meet new people and make money by just sending helpful emails every now and then!</p>
<p>Truth is, I care a lot about my mission as a Coach: to help people get fit and enjoy a healthy, fulfilling life.</p>
<p>I now have an international team of coaches who are doing the same thing, and I so enjoy mentoring them! Together, we&#8217;re better!</p>
<p>Sometimes I think about what my life would look like if I hadn&#8217;t said YES to being a Coach. I could have overcomplicated it and spent too long in the &#8220;what if&#8221;s. I could have whined and complained about learning new things. I could have accepted my initial complacency and laziness (so and so&#8217;s not fit, why should I be?). But I sure am thankful I didn&#8217;t do those things!</p>
<p>My name is Katy Gillis. I&#8217;m an accidental Beachbody Coach who jumped in just in case this could be what I thought it was. It&#8217;s blown my expectations out of the water.</p>
<p>They say there is always a catch &#8211; not here. Beachbody is awesome &#8211; whether it&#8217;s helping people get fit, or helping people get paid so they can help those people get fit!</p>
<p>Beachbody has won my diehard loyalty.</p>

<p>In this eye-opening book, Shaunti Feldhahn gives us women a glimpse into the inner lives of the men in our lives. If we want to be better women, it&#8217;s imperative that we know how men think so we can do that!</p>
<p>My main take away from this book is realizing that my husband has romanced me in so many ways that I, being unaware that they were romantic gestures, was blissfully unaware of. So I thought he just didn&#8217;t like romance&#8230;no, he was just romancing me in his own MAN kind of way! What a blessing it is for me to be able to affirm and encourage my husband as he makes steps towards me, now that I can see these quiet actions for what they really are.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Women-Only-Revised-Updated-Edition/dp/1601424442/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;keywords=for%20women%20only&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;qid=1368567884&amp;sr=8-1&amp;tag=gillisc-20" target="_blank">For Women Only</a> is a must-read ladies. Don&#8217;t delay &#8211; if you have a man in your life, you owe it to him to make the effort to understand him. And he may not be able to articulate exactly what that is, so he&#8217;ll appreciate you reading this book and learning all by yourself. Go get it. If you&#8217;re like me, you&#8217;ll be so glad you did!</p>

<p>Congratulations! You&#8217;re done with INSANITY®, P90X®, or another Beachbody® program, and you love the results. But you&#8217;re also sick of hammering your body every day and watching each calorie you put into your mouth. So, what now? Can you keep your new body without all the work?</p>

<p>Yes and no. In order to function well, you need to move and properly fuel your body. But the fitter you are, the easier it is to stay fit. This means you can maintain your fitness with much less effort than it took to get there.</p>
<p>The following checklist will provide you with a sensible plan to maintain your results.</p>
<h4>Lesson 1: Take a break!</h4>
<p>Before you worry about keeping your results, you should celebrate. You&#8217;ve earned it! Your fitness won&#8217;t fall apart overnight, and a break will give you physical and—more importantly—mental relief from worrying about training, diet, and results.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t worry about losing fitness. A little time off will actually improve your fitness by allowing your body to heal. Too much time off, however, <em>will</em> start things sliding the other way. I recommend no more than one full week off. You can exercise during this break and I strongly recommend it. Just make it fun and don&#8217;t follow a regimented program.</p>
<h4>Lesson 2: Without a maintenance plan, expect to keep your results for about as long as it took you to get them.</h4>
<p>It takes approximately 3 weeks off to fully undo 3 weeks of training, while it may take 3 months to fully lose 90 days&#8217; worth of effort—it takes about the same amount of time to lose your fitness as it took for you to attain it. But since starting at square one sucks (remember?), you never want to wait too long to restart your training.</p>
<h4>Lesson 3: Create a maintenance schedule</h4>
<p>To maintain your fitness, you&#8217;ll need around half the volume of your training program. The two simplest ways to do this are with full workouts every other day or with half workouts 6 days per week.</p>
<p>For the full workout plan, pick workouts to do every other day. The workout you do can be based on what you feel like you need. There are many maintenance workout suggestions, like P90X ONE on ONE®, INSANITY Fast and Furious, Brazil Butt Lift® Master Series, and so on. You can also mix and match from other workout programs, like a fusion of Insanity and P90X. The key is that you push your body in the way it was accustomed to during your training program.</p>
<p>Doing half workouts is trickier because you&#8217;re probably going to have to abridge your workouts. Instead of &#8220;just Pushing Play,&#8221; it&#8217;s up to you to structure your workout. A good general guideline is to warm up, do one or two rounds of exercises, and then fast-forward to the workout&#8217;s cooldown (or do a cooldown on your own). About 80% of a workout&#8217;s value happens during the first few sets. And while that may put you 20% under elite fitness, it&#8217;s perfectly fine for maintenance.</p>
<p>With either schedule, you&#8217;ll want to make sure you&#8217;re not doing similar workouts too close to each other. Don&#8217;t do plyometrics or work similar body parts back to back.</p>
<h4>Lesson 4: Continue to push yourself.</h4>
<p>Just because you&#8217;re working out less doesn&#8217;t mean you can slack off. Your workouts should improve over time while you&#8217;re maintaining, the same way they improved over time during your program. Your goal during each workout is still to lift more weight, move faster, jump higher, go deeper into stretches, and mimic the trainers as much as possible. Your body needs to be pushed. If it&#8217;s not, it will regress.</p>
<h4>Lesson 5: Eat how you did when you were out of shape and your results will melt away.</h4>
<p>For a few days, or even longer, it will seem like you can now inhale burgers, beers, and everything else that you&#8217;ve been denying yourself without any consequences. This won&#8217;t last. It&#8217;s a fun perk, and while your new, fitter body will endure splurges much better than it did before, it is not, and will never be, immune to packing the pounds back on. It&#8217;s like the saying goes, you can&#8217;t out-exercise a bad diet. At least you can&#8217;t forever.</p>
<h4>Lesson 6: You don&#8217;t need to eat as strict a diet as you did during your program.</h4>
<p>On the flip side, you don&#8217;t need to eat like you have a fitness competition coming up unless, well, you have a fitness competition coming up. In fact, you probably shouldn&#8217;t. Beachbody programs are &#8220;boot camps.&#8221; They are designed to be very strict. Real life should be more relaxed and include indulgences. Fitness competitors don&#8217;t stay in competition shape all the time, and neither should you.</p>
<p>There are a few popular maintenance strategies incorporated by fit people. One is the 80/20 rule. Keep 80% of your diet healthy and clean so that you can let your hair down with the remaining 20%. Another is workweeks on and weekends off. <p>Whatever you do, just remember that your new body needs more calories to maintain than it did when you began your program. That&#8217;s because your muscle-to-fat ratio is higher than it was when you started, so your metabolism is higher. Food is also essential for rebuilding the breakdown caused by your workouts, all of which means you need (or get) to eat more.</p>
<p>Ultimately, your goal is to stop calorie counting and learn to eat based on how your body feels. If you&#8217;re lacking energy, eat more. Avoid excessive eating by stopping before you&#8217;re full and realizing that when you overeat you feel sluggish and uncomfortable. By eating intuitively, you can maintain your physique more easily than by measuring every morsel you put in your mouth.</p>
<h4>Lesson 7: You can&#8217;t maintain forever.</h4>
<p>A solid maintenance plan can keep you fit for a long time. However, if you want the level of fitness you had after your last program, you&#8217;re going to require a reboot every so often, as in reboot camp. There&#8217;s simply no way around the fact that elite fitness requires sacrifice, hard work, and getting out of your comfort zone from time to time. P90X2, anyone?</p>

<div id="my-journey-q1"><b>Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?</b></div>

<div><b></b>Before I was in complete denial about my weight and what it really meant. I was sexually abused at the age of 5 and since that time I used food as my comfort and a way for me to escape the pain of my daily living. My weight kept growing and I was told by family and friends that I was always going to be fat and that this was who I was and to accept it. I used food and my weight to fill the void and pain I was suffering from, as I grew up and was blessed with my 4 children, my life became more about them then myself. I never sought help to deal with my eating, emotional and depression issues, thus the weight kept piling on. My highest weight was 289 and I am 5’4, I felt like my life wasn’t my own and that my body was worthless and ugly. I was so ashamed of myself that I would hide my eating and force myself to workout, wanting that quick fix, which never worked. I wasn’t able to play with my children, even bathing was hard, I was beyond humiliated and felt like a failure.</div>

<div id="my-journey-q2"><b>What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?</b></div>
<p></strong></p>
<div><b></b>My Coach had a picture of a woman’s transformation that looked similar to me; I saw that picture and thought, well she did it, could I do it? I contacted her and we had several hearts to hearts where she told me that I have greatness in me and it would be a process, but that I too could achieve anything. By her having faith in me, it encouraged and inspired me to believe in me too. I was so sick of not being the woman I knew was inside, I was so tiered of hiding under all the weight, both physical and emotional. I decided I needed to do something drastic to be a constant reminder of my commitment to my health and goals, so I shaved my head. I decided in that moment to take that action and allow myself this opportunity to face the fear of cutting my long hair and face the fear of reaching my goals. I knew that it would be a process for my hair to grow back and I also knew it would be a process for my body to transform, so this was my way of showing my commitment</div>

<div id="my-journey-q3"><b>What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody® help you overcome that challenge?</b></div>
<p></strong></p>
<div><b></b>In the beginning my greatest challenge was learning to trust the process, do my best and forget the rest. Sounded easy enough, but my mind was still thinking, I need to be perfect now, I need this to happen now. I began to realize that I didn’t get like this overnight and I wouldn’t change overnight. I realized that as I did lose the weight I was faced with the core issues of what caused me to get that way, so it brought up a lot of hurt and pain, dealing with and accepting that was a huge challenge and not one we usually talk about. The fact of the matter is that the weight is only a symptom of what really was the core issues and P90x not only taught me how to change my body, it taught me how to own, accept and change my mind and my feelings. I learned that I am no longer a victim, I am more than a conquer and that I chose to get better and I have the power to choose life over death. So my biggest challenge was learning that its much more than a number on a scale its mental.</div>

<div id="my-journey-q4"><b>Why did you choose this particular program?</b></div>
<p></strong></p>
<div><b></b>I chose this program because I felt like Tony was there with me, I felt that he just popped out of the screen and really was talking to me. I remember hearing him say “do your best and forget the rest” and that became my motto. Every day I learned to stop judging myself and I learned to trust the process. I was so inspired by other peoples success and results I knew that I could have success too. Modification was key for me, I knew that at 289 pounds I wasn’t able to tie my shoes much less do the signature moves, but I also knew that it wasn’t where I started that mattered, what mattered is the fact that I started. From that moment on I never gave up, it took time and there was no quick fixes which is what Tony always talked about, that this is my process and journey to take. I also loved the fact that I could follow the nutritional guideline and know that I was getting the nutrients I needed and really learned how and what to eat. This was no longer just about losing weight.</div>

<div id="mdb-contest-essay-success-answer1"><b>What in particular did you like about the program you chose?</b></div>
<p></strong></p>
<div><b></b>I liked the fact that I felt empowered every time I would work out, I felt like I was accomplishing something and even though I modified A LOT, I did it. I felt pride and joy in my heart as I began to do the program with more ease and I felt ALIVE. For the first time in my life I felt like I was living and achieving and really had the chance to see myself change. Then when I started to see my weight melt off and see and feel my muscles grow and really see the change I was a P90x addict. This was no longer just about losing weight it was a lifestyle change and one I felt I could do and teach my children to do too. So what I really liked was learning that this was so much more than a number on a scale it was mental and emotional too and by showing up and pressing play every day I took back some of my integrity and power every day. I see the stretch marks and feel ashamed of how bad I allowed myself to get, but the shame I no longer feel because I was able to take back my dignity.</div>

<div id="mdb-contest-essay-success-answer2"><b>Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?</b></div>
<p></strong></p>
<div><b></b>In the beginning of this journey I was in complete denial that I had a problem and more so that my not dealing with my problems did affect other people, especially my children, my eldest who is now 9 years old would sneak food and over eat and never feel happy about herself. I realized that Beachbody taught me a new way of life, fitness, nutrition, motivation and faith and changed my life and the lives of my children. I am so proud and humbled by the fact that my children saw me dedicating my time to this program and they saw the results. I am proud that my children would join in on the exercises and want to drink Shakeology. I am proud that they have been able to see that it’s not where you’ve been that makes you who you are, it’s how you got though it that makes us the people we are today. It wasn’t easy but it was worth it. As of today I have lost 129 pounds and I still am working on my goal of another 30 pounds to weigh 130.</div>

<div><b></b>My life is filled with joy and I am able to see that dedication, determination and a lot of perspiration got me to achieve my goals and thats the biggest blessing of all. I am so proud and deeply humbled by the amazing programs that Beachbody has and that they truly saved my life. I went from size 28 to size 8. I have been able to lose 129 lbs. with the combination of Shakeology and P90x and BBL. This has been a very emotional and amazing experience for me that has truly impacted every aspect of my life and the lives of those around me. I have come to learn acceptance of myself, and where I am, I no longer feel the shame that comes from hiding the issue of my weight and that pain. I have learned that I am able to make change and I have learned how to believe in myself, something that I never knew how to do. The physical part of this transformation is really a small part, the real and amazing part is where my mind and heart changes and sees the potential and power in myself.</div>

<div>Yes I had high blood pressure and diabetes and now since working out with p90x and taking Shakeology I have no blood sugar issues and perfect blood pressure.</div>

<p>I have been doing<a href="http://teambeachbody.com/shop/-/shopping/BCPX2205?referringRepId=31192" target="_blank"> P90X2</a> for 7 weeks, and was so jazzed about the results it has given me in such a short amount of time! I have a group of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/401716803198719/" target="_blank">women on Facebook</a> who are all working out and staying motivated together, many of who are doing P90X, P90X2, or Insanity. In this group, I committed to posting at least one video on<a href="http://www.youtube.com/katygillisbeachbody" target="_blank"> YouTube</a> of each of my workouts and have had such fun doing it! I am so thankful for these women. Because of them I didn&#8217;t miss a day&#8230;until last Thursday.</p>
<p>On Thursday morning, I had a packed day planned: clean house, chiropractic visit for a routine adjustment, grocery shopping, and packing for a long weekend trip to Charlotte (Andy had to move one of his offices from one location in the city to another and the kids and I were going along for the ride <img src='http://gilliscoaching.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt="icon smile P90X2 on hold..." class='wp-smiley' title="P90X2 on hold..." />  ).</p>
<p>Around 10 am, I loaded my little ones (Livy, 4, and Liam, 2) into the double BOB stroller and jogged 1.5 miles to Town Brookhaven for my errands. Completed, I power-walked back home since the stroller was loaded down from my groceries. Put groceries away, Liam down for a nap, and I pushed play on Plyocide, the plyometric (jump training) workout in P90X2. 3 moves in, I felt a shocking pain run from my lower back to the toes of my right leg&#8230;such a shock it put me on the ground for a few moments.</p>
<p>With all of the back-to-back exercising I had done directly before and after my chiropractic adjustment, I had irritated my sciatic nerve.</p>
<p>Doctors treatment plan: 2-3 chiropractic adjustments each week until all is well, estimated time 2-3 weeks. During that time, very limited exercise (&#8220;definitely NOT P90X2!!&#8221; he said).</p>
<p>This has been a humbling experience. Last week, at the peak of P90X2, I was feeling so very strong and able to conquer the world (endorphins are powerful mood lifters!) but this little injury, a product of over-doing it, is a good reminder that no matter how healthy one is, one is still vulnerable. In my vulnerability, I am pleasantly surprised at how much I am enjoying being fully dependent on God.</p>
<p>A year ago, I would have been so very frustrated and upset with the fact that when healing or dealing with back pain, one has to be patient. Today I do not feel that way. I am simply thankful that I am aware of the Lord&#8217;s hand in my life, in every area of it, and He is teaching me (through experiences like this!) to enjoy the moment, the journey, to praise Him and depend on Him at all times. Good times, bad times, back issues. He is the One constant that I feel so at peace resting on when resting is in my best interest.</p>
<p>So as I lay P90X2 on the sidelines for the next few weeks, I am joyful, thankful, and at peace with this very season.</p>

<p>I believe that God cares for each one of us, even me. Not because of who I am , but because of what He&#8217;s done. Not because of what I&#8217;ve done, but because of who He is. I used to walk through my days without much thought to God and what He wanted from or for me and my life. Through His seeking me and me accepting His hand, these last few years have been incredible as He is moving my stubborn grips, selfish ambitions and twisted ways of thinking over to His pure, good, and perfect plans. I am reveling in the consciousness He has brought me to where I think of Him in more and more situations. I am thankful for being in this very season, and eager yet still fearful of the next step forward. As I close my eyes, grip His hand, and take the next step by the urging of His Spirit in me, I am constantly blown away by not only the outcome, but by His peace that He gives to me during each challenge (that really does pass all understanding!). My whole life is His, as I pray:</p>
<p>Father God,</p>
<p>Teach me to love You more. Help me do Your will. I put You first above all else. Break my heart for what breaks Yours. Everything I am for your Kingdom&#8217;s cause.</p>
<p>Creation reveals Your majesty! You are amazing God! You make the stars in the sky and You know them by name! You give life to the lifeless and hope to the hopeless.</p>
<p>Help me as I filter my every thought, action, and word through Your guidelines so that You will be praised and people are brought closer to You.</p>
<p>Thank You for Your invitation to be fully dependent on You for my every breath and every thing I need to do Your will.</p>
<p>Help me see each and every person how You see them, and treat them as I would treat You.</p>
<p>Lord, my whole life is Yours, I give it all. My whole life will say &#8220;how great is our God!&#8221;</p>

<p style="text-align: center;">One thing I struggle with as a woman is being busy. I often over-book, over-stimulate, and over-stress myself under the guise of &#8220;I can fit it all in!&#8221; and though sometimes I feel like I can fit it all in, I find that my family and close relationships suffer because I have little time for enjoying them. Because of this fast-paced life I tend to throw myself into, THIS devotional was my first choice this year as the title promised to help me help myself slow down! It has come through and done exactly that for me.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">This devotional is short, each one just one page in length&#8230;perfect for a busy mom! She quotes a scripture to think about at the beginning of each devotional, as well as a scripture to look up and review at the end. I enjoyed taking a few moments to open my bible and read the passages she recommended and then answering the questions afterwards. This got me thinking about how to apply the context into my own life.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">The Lord is taking me through this incredible journey of getting to know Himself, His heart, and His mission and Joanna&#8217;s devotional hit home by helping me seek consistent, daily quite time with Him.</p>
